Groundbreaking initiative to support domestic abuse victims
Spearheaded by three leading tech-for-good platforms in collaboration with the National Benevolent Charity (NBC), a groundbreaking initiative has successfully met its initial fundraising goal of £20,000. This effort has already helped over 100 victims of domestic abuse, whilst transforming the way support is provided by domestic abuse charities.
“We’ve moved from a refuge and didn’t have a bed for my child; he was sharing a mattress on the floor with me. It has made our life so much easier being able to buy him a bed.”
The ‘Home is Where the Harm Is’ appeal was designed to offer rapid financial relief to victims of domestic abuse, aiding those who need to flee immediate danger or rebuild their lives as they recover. Launched during the Euro 2024 with a powerful campaign video, the awareness of domestic abuse was essential to help those victims during a known period of high levels of domestic abuse
The campaign has received 450 donations through Crowdfunder, directing the funds raised to the National Benevolent Charity to meet their £20,000 goal. These donations were then transferred immediately to CashPerks, whose technology enables victims to withdraw mini-grants of up to £200 from local cash machines without a cash card. Applicants seeking these mini-grants applied through Lightning Reach, who facilitated the review and approval process within hours.
Studies and experiences documented by NBC highlight that domestic abuse often includes not just physical violence but also mental abuse and financial control by the abuser. These innovations are revolutionising support for domestic abuse victims, who can now escape life-threatening situations within two days compared to the previous wait times of weeks or months.
The campaign also attracted significant attention from British Airways, which pledged £5,000 through live match funding. An additional £5,000 from all partners involved meant that public donations were tripled, enabling more individuals to be helped.
One beneficiary shared, “This money came at a time I most needed help… When all options have failed, it was a blessing.”
Another expressed, “It made a huge difference as I am in refuge and came with absolutely nothing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Belinda, a donator to the project commented, “Being brave enough to leave is a big step. Helping with cash is so proactive. It’s a great idea. I hope victims realise this comes with love and support from all of us out here.”
Each cash grant represents a vital step towards empowerment for survivors, offering them the means to escape dangerous situations and rebuild their lives. The success of this appeal underscores the power of community-driven initiatives and their impact on vulnerable populations.
Although the initial fund has been fully allocated, the journey continues. The National Benevolent Charity is calling on philanthropists, companies, and compassionate individuals to support this cause to sustain progress. Additional contributions are crucial to extend the reach of this life-saving programme, ensuring more individuals can access the financial aid they desperately need.
Ali Russell, CEO National Benevolent Charity, stated “Using this innovative approach, every penny donated has already been sent directly to women and men who have suffered at the hands of their abuser. The amount may be small but the impact is huge and the need is massive, so please keep giving and know that you are changing someone’s life forever”
Simon Deverell, co-CEO Crowdfunder, said “We’re thrilled to see our partner British Airways pledge £5,000 to match donations from the crowd, along with the invaluable support from all our partners and Crowdfunder for this critical campaign. To keep making a real impact on people’s lives, we urgently need more companies and grant providers to join us in showing their commitment to tackling domestic abuse in the UK.”
